17.000 ISLANDS

17000 Islands is an interactive documentary which explores different models of reality by looking at how the image of a nation is created and how making a documentary about it becomes part of the creation process. 17000 Islands is shot in the “Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park”, former president Suharto’s 1975 attempt at displaying a model of a perfect Indonesia. The twist is that the original film has subsequently been altered, reimagined and re-edited by users online, producing new structures and viewpoints out of the same core material. In the process, the directors and their host of contributing editors ask profound questions about the nature of truth and reality in documentary filmmaking.
